Skype
Hopefully you have heard of Skype. It is the most popular "Voice over IP" out there. (IP = Internet Protocol.) You can talk with someone just like over a phone line from computer to computer free anywhere in the world where there is broadband available. You only need a microphone and speakers. Many people like me use a simple headset with microphone. The quality of voice over IP has greatly improved in the last couple of years. You can also purchase a regular type phone to go with Skype as part of their offerings, but it isn't needed. I also have "Skype In" - which is a normal phone number associated with Skype account. It also is not free, but is a great tool for me since I am mobile with my work and do not have a permanent land line or mobile number. My Skype number goes wherever I plug my computer in -voicemail and all. You don't have to own a computer either! Most countries have internet cafe's with Skype already installed. You may want to purchase your own headset with microphone. "Skype Out" is also a great option, especially if you have your own laptop. It is not free like regular Skype, but gives you the flexibility to call regular phone numbers, land lines or cellular, usually for a lot less money than other options. The rate for most of my calls is 2.1 cents/minute. You can also use a video feed with Skype so you can see and be seen on the computer screen. I've neglected this since it does seem to take a really good connection with up to date computers for this, otherwise it can affect call quality.
