Missionary Work
Missionary Work - What do missionaries do? Volumes of books have been written to answer this question, but here are two quick answers: #1. Missionary Work is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ - or in other words, those who act on the commandment of Jesus called the "Great Commission" (found in several places in the New Testament, including the Gospel of Matthew:) "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." #2. Missionary Work is doing anything and everything to support #1. - or in other words, Missionary work could involve almost any type of skill or occupation. It is not so much the work, but the motive behind it. If the motive is to proclaim Jesus and the establish the Kingdom, it is missions work. In Fiji last year we had hundreds of missionaries working together to see over 17,000 young people come to Jesus. (You can watch a video about it at our personal web site
by clicking here.)
Many of the missionaries were what would be considered traditional missionaries preaching the Gospel, but we have dozens of others; truck drivers, sound and lighting experts, counselors, office workers, etc, etc. All were considered missionaries. Missionary work is also often associated with "mercy" ministries. These are works that may or may not be less overtly evangelistic, but offer mankind care or comfort, such as orphanages. A new wave of missionary is also arising upon the earth also - the intercessory missionary. Their work is not defined by leaving and going - but by devoting themselves to prayer.
IHOP - International House of Prayer,
is one of the many organizations devoted to the training and raising up of this type of missionary. Regardless of ones skills, talents, or desires - almost anyone can find a need and fulfill it in the profession of a missionary.
