Missionary Stories

Below you will see some of the best know missionary stories of the ages. We should honor and learn from those who have gone before and gave so much. If you are looking for missionary stories, follow the links and invest in the literature.

One of my favorite stories is from a fellow missionary serving in Africa. He was out late one night at a village and on his way back to his home with a couple of companions. All of a sudden there was pitch darkness even though the head lights on his car were still on. They all screamed and the car finally came to a halt. It was very dark so they decided just to go to sleep in the car and continue at first light.

When they got out of the car in the morning, they walked back to see what might have happened. To their amazement, they were looking at a huge gorge with the bridge broken and gone!

Personally I believe in miracles and could tell many stories that I have heard and believe - First hand accounts of God's miraculous and creative powers. It just makes sense to me that missionary stories would be filled with these accounts. The Bible is full of them! Jesus himself said they would continue, and church history reveals the miraculous throughout the centuries. So - we hope these heros and their missionary stories will inspire you.

Here are a few of my favorites with some of their descriptions from YWAM Publishing:

Brother Andrew: God's Secret Agent

When he became God's smuggler, Brother Andrew was already familiar with risk. As a boy, the intrepid Andrew van der Bijl joined the Dutch Resistance against the Nazi occupation. As a young man, he fought eagerly in the Dutch East Indies - until the horror of war turned the adventure seeker to a life of alcohol and desperation.

Redeemed by God, the Dutchman became a daring messenger of hope, smuggling Scripture through closed borders and equipping persecuted Christians behind the Iron Curtain. Today Brother Andrew and the ministry of Open Doors continue to shine the light of Christ in the world's darkest places. (1928- )

Count Zinzendorf: First Fruit

An unusually mature Christian at a very young age, Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) did not follow the course dictated by his noble birth but followed God's call even to the point of being banned from his native Saxony. Once destined for the royal court, the count instead became a spiritual father to millions.

Count Zinzendorf opened his estate to persecuted Moravian Christians, and under his leadership this vibrant community launched the modern missions movement.

Corrie ten Boom: Keeper of the Angels' Den

The life of Corrie ten Boom, survivor of the Nazi concentration camps, is a testimony to the victory of forgiveness over bitterness. Suddenly, Corrie's ordered life was lost in the insanity of war. With bravery and compassion, her family and countless other Dutch citizens risked everything to extend God's hand to those innocents marked for certain execution in a world gone mad.

Corrie ten Boom's life of determination, faith, and forgiveness in the face of unimaginable brutality and hardship is a stunning testimony of the sustaining power of God (1892-1983).

Brother Yun: THE HEAVENLY MAN

A dramatic autobiography of one of China's dedicated, courageous, and intensely persecuted house church leaders.

The intensely dramatic true story of how God took a young, half-starved boy from a poor village in Henan Province, China, and used him mightily to preach the gospel despite intense persecution, torture and imprisonment.

Brother Yun is one of China's house church leaders, a man who despite his relative youth has suffered prolonged torture and imprisonment for his faith. His account challenges any complacency about the situation in China, where international economic investment ignores the brutal fact that religious persecution is still a daily reality for millions. Instead of focusing on the many miracles or experiences of suffering, however, Yun prefers to emphasize the character and beauty of Jesus. Link directly to Heavenly Man
